For Shirts Sake ~ Body Image Activist Teri Hofford

I have never been one to really have a “true style”. Like, you know how there are some people out there that when you see an article of clothing or trend, you know exactly who that would be? I have never been that person. My usual go to (for ease) is black leggings + a tank top or tshirt for when I am photographing, but the one staple item that has ALWAYS been in my wardrobe, are tees and tanks with sassy sayings…usually in the body image realm. In fact, I had an article published in Fabuplus magazine for this exact topic! I truly feel that when you have shirts with sayings on the front, it really lets people know where you stand before they even make an effort…maybe that’s a good or bad thing, but because I try to keep my messages relatively positive, it usually is uplifting and becomes a great conversation starter!

As for how I plan to wear these bad boys during the month of May? Well, you will just have to wait and see!! But I can tell you, my go to is: tucked into a fave skater skirt and under my overalls!

In any case, below are 5+ of my favorite places to grab shirts from!

  1. Babes Against BS

I know, I know, how lame that I am pimping out my own wardrobe, but the reason I created these shirts is because I couldn’t find any with EXACTLY what I wanted to say. Every now and then I update them with something new and exciting and there are tshirts and tanks for boudoir photographers, body positive humans, and some of my favorites, the Club Empath ones!

2. Fat.Mermaids

Oh my god, I remember the first time I saw the “IDGAF about your diet Susan” shirt, I was sooooold! Not to mention that the babe who runs this amazingly awesome shop does it all herself…FROM HER HOME!! WHAT???! Like, that is true dedication! The level of sass runs high in this shop so I don’t mind spending my $$ one bit with them!!!

3. Shop Fiercely

I try to wear few feminist tshirts when I am traveling between Canada and the US, particular in the current political climate, however, sometimes when I am feel extra sassafrass, I will don my “feminist she-devil” shirt from Shop Fiercely and every time I have gotten a female TSA agent or stewardess, they ALWAYS compliment on it in a “YOU GO GIRL” fashion! I love that part of their proceeds go to a charity of your choosing (they have a list!) and they have extensive sizing!

4. Dazey_LA

AH! I just loooove their whole aesthetic! Not only do I love their shirts, but also their blogs are amazing! While they recognize the need for current businesses to exist on the interwebs, they are doing their part to help educate and combat the way we feel about ourselves after looking online. Their most recent collab was with the She’s All Fat podcast babes, which is awesome! They listened to their followers and are working hard to increase the sizing ranges that they offer! That being said, the tees go up to a 2x-4x depending on the style/image and they are hella comfy. I have been known to sport my Normalize Nips tee when hosting photography workshops and I just recently acquired their Power In Vulnerability items. All of the graphics are illustrated by the owner, they offer payment plans, they have a killer vintage flare…… and I just love, love, love, everything about them! (Also, some of the graphics you can download to save as backgrounds for your phone + computer!!) use code SAUCYFOXES to score 10% off!

5. Feminist Apparel

To round out my list, I am mentioning Feminist Apparel. They were one of the first companies that caught my eye through the power of instagram and I just loved the variety of messages, images, and options that they made available in their online shop. To date, their Empowered Women Empower Women shirt is still one of my favorites, but since it got old, I bought another! I love the graphic, the message, and this is one of the ones I usually will wear when I do speaking engagements!

6. BONUS!! Kidd Bell

I almost forgot about this shop, but it is truly one of my favorites for my more vocal shirts. I LOVE LOVE LOVE their Women Don’t Owe You Shit sports bra, their Let Boys Be Feminine tshirt, and Don’t Be a Dick panties, but to be honest all of their shit is phenomenal! Also, they tend to include a handful of amazing stickers in their package which I loooooove!

That should be enough to get you locked and loaded on the tshirt front! Over the next few weeks leading up to May, I will be sending out listicles like this of my favorite places to buy my favorite sparkly, furry, fun stuff (and not break the bank!)
